Everyone loves baked ham. Especially a Honey Baked Ham. Instead of paying $75.00 to $100.00 on a ham, why not make it yourself with a much lower priced ham from the grocery store?
HOW MUCH IS IT FOR A HAM FROM THE GROCERY STORE?
I paid $25.00 for a 10 lb. fully cooked spiral ham with the bone.
HOW DO YOU GLAZE HAM?
Firstly, take the ham out of the refrigerator 1-2 hours before you are ready to cook.
Then make the preglaze of honey, butter. I also threw in some mandarin marmalade. Coat the top of the spiral ham getting the glaze into the sliced area so it goes in between the meat. I tied the ham with butchers twine so all the slices stay together and stay moist. Then I completely cover the ham with aluminum foil. Bake a 10 pound ham for 1 hour 40 minutes at 275 degrees F.
Take out, uncover and sprinkle the dry sugar mixture all over the top of the ham. Under the broiler in your oven, place ham until top gets bubbling and starts to caramelize. Then you spread the glaze mixture that has been cooked all over the top and put back in the broiler.
Note: My broiler in my oven is an infrared broiler. This gets substantially hotter than a broiler in a regular oven. When I put the ham in the broiler, even though it was as far away as I could get it, it still got well done on the top only after a couple minutes. I have read that you can also caramelize the top with a torch.
I can tell you the glaze is caramelized and flavorful like a Honey Baked Ham. Also, the original recipe I adapted my recipe from (The Chunky Chef), cooks hers in the slow cooker. I made mine in the oven. I think got way overcooked in the oven.

WOULD I TRY THIS GLAZE AGAIN?
Definitely! I am so glad I tried this recipe. I have been meaning to try a recipe that gets the glaze just like Honey Baked Ham Store and this does it. The coating was super delicious, and only complaint I have is that I think I overcooked the ham on too high a temperature in the oven and the pre-cut spiral slices made at the factory were uneven. I am going to try and perfect the cooking of the ham by trying in the slow cooker but the glaze recipe is a keeper!
BAKING IN THE SLOW COOKER:
I tried cooking a boneless spiral sliced ham in the slow cooker. I cooked for 5 hours on low. The recipe called for 4-1/2 to 5-1/2 hours. But…my ham was much smaller. The ham had loads of juice in the bottom where the oven method didn’t, but again I feel it was way over cooked. It’s almost like the spiral slices opened up some and dried out the ham even though I tied the ham together. Again, the glaze was exactly like Honey Baked Ham.
I have decided I like the slow cooker method. For a small ham just for the two of us I will cook for maybe 3-1/2 to 4 hours and see how that is. Also, I will try a ham that is not spiral sliced. I think it will have a much better chance of not drying out.
SHOULD YOU GLAZE THE HAM WITH A TORCH?
I would not advise it. It seemed to flare up and I was getting a little nervous the entire ham would go up in flames. As you can see above, it started to burn in spots. So…I went to Plan B and put it in my Breville countertop Convection oven. That hardened the glaze nicely without burning. You could also use the broiler in your oven.
Which ever way you caramelize the glaze, make sure you line the pan with aluminum foil. Clean up is a nightmare without it!
More results to come from the un-sliced boneless ham done in the slow cooker.
Copycat Honey Baked Ham
Description
Make this delicious Honey Baked Ham store ham with signature glaze right at home.
Ingredients
10 lb bone-in spiral sliced half ham
2 Tbsp butter, melted
3 Tbsp honey
1 1/2 cups granulated sugar
1/2 tsp seasoned salt
1/2 tsp onion powder
1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
1/2 tsp ground nutmeg
1/4 tsp ground ginger
1/4 tsp ground cloves
1/4 tsp paprika
pinch of allspice
Instructions
Slow cooker method:
Combine melted butter and honey, then massage over ham, getting in between the slices a little. Trim ham if needed, then place in slow cooker. Cover and cook on LOW 4-5 hours.
Oven method:
Combine melted butter and honey, then massage over ham, getting in between the slices a little. Cover entire ham with foil. Bake in preheated 275 degree F oven for 1 hour and 45 minutes.
At the end of the cooking time, preheat broiler to HIGH, and line a roasting pan with heavy duty aluminum foil. Lining with foil is essential as glaze hardens when cooled making the pan cleanup a nightmare.
Combine sugar, seasoned salt, onion powder, ground cinnamon, ground nutmeg, ground ginger, ground cloves, paprika and allspice in a small bowl. Pat half of the sugar mixture over the top of the ham.
Broil for several minutes, until bubbly and caramelized, then remove from oven.
To a small saucepan, add remaining sugar mixture. Add 3 Tbsp of either water or ham juices from bottom of the slow cooker. Stir, and heat to a boil. Boil for about a minute, then remove from heat.
Brush or pour glaze over the ham, then broil again for a minute or two (careful… don’t let it burn!). Remove from oven and let ham rest for 5-10 minutes.
Serve warm or cold and enjoy!
Notes
If using an infrared broiled, be extremely careful not to burn. You can also use a kitchen torch to caramelize the glaze.
