Philly Mexican Dip

Delicious layers of taco seasoned cream cheese and sour cream, scallions, Mexican shredded cheese, black olives, shredded lettuce, and diced tomatoes.
I found this recipe years ago (and I mean years) on the inside of a package of a Philadelphia Cream Cheese.

The original recipe used fresh tomatoes. All the recipes you see today use salsa instead of the tomatoes.

I have tried it with salsa and don’t care for it because the salsa makes the entire dip way to sloppy and it looks terrible after the first person digs into it.

I make it with the fresh chopped or sliced cherry tomatoes. You could also season the fresh tomatoes, or add onions and cilantro to make a fresh salsa from the tomatoes as long as you let the tomatoes drain before putting into the dish. Tomatoes are pretty watery, so if you don’t want the rest of your ingredients watery you always have to drain them. You can layer between paper towels or put in a colander to drain.

I have doctored the original recipe a bit, in that I added a cup or so sour cream to the cream cheese mixture. I thought just the cream cheese was too difficult to scoop with a tortilla chip. I also added a dollop of sour cream seasoned with the powdered Taco seasoning on the top of the dip. I added some sliced scallions on top of the sour cream, but you can also add some chopped cilantro.

You can also omit anything you choose, but I will say it is delicious the way it is.

As I am always looking for shortcuts, I buy a can of sliced black olives, and a bag of shredded lettuce. I don’t believe those were available when this recipe first came out so things have definitely progressed in the right direction.
