I was going through my Mom’s recipe box and cookbooks recently and noticed this recipe called “Supper Dish” from a Canadian cookbook she got when visiting relatives in Canada. I starting reading and remembered having this recipe when my cousin was visiting us from Canada. I was probably about 12 years old. I think of it often but never had the recipe. It is basically American Chop Suey only it uses tomato soup instead of tomato sauce. The sauce is much less acidic and more sweet than a home made sauce or sauce from a jar. It’s a delicious and different weeknight meal.
This recipe is most definitely an old time recipe. And like I said, one I have thought of often. Instead of the acidic tomato sauce that some sauces can have, this sauce is sweet. If you like tomato soup, you will love this variation.

The only thing I varied from the recipe in the cookbook, is I added some diced green bell pepper in with the onions and reduced the onions to 1-1/2 onions. I thought 3 onions were a lot for one pound of ground beef. I didn’t add the sugar either. I wanted to taste the sauce first and felt it didn’t need it.
I realized I didn’t have my American Chop Suey recipe I make quite often on here so I took the one pound package of ground beef and added some onion, green bell pepper and one clove garlic to the skillet. My American Chop Suey recipe has garlic in it and thought the one clove wouldn’t really stand out much. I sauteed the one pound in one pan and then split up into two one half pounds of cooked ground beef. Then I added the sauce ingredients for the two recipes.
I have to say, I much prefer the tomato soup sauce in the Supper Dish recipe than the jarred sauce I used for the American Chop Suey. I find the latter to be acidic a lot of the times. The Supper Dish recipe is not acidic at all and sweet. I loved the addition of the green bell peppers and did not taste the garlic at all. So it is your choice whether to put the garlic or not as long as you limit it to 1 clove to one pound of ground beef.
This recipe is super simple to make:
Saute onions, hamburger, salt and pepper in a skillet or electric fry pan.
Add 1-2 cans tomato soup, and 1 tsp sugar to meat mixture. Simmer over low heat.
Cook 1-1/2 cups elbow macaroni in boiling water. When cooked, drain and add to tomato/meat mixture.
The one thing I notice about recipes from years ago compared to today’s recipes if that they were so much simpler and used much less ingredients. You couldn’t get any simpler than this recipe.
What ingredients do I need?
1-1/2 to 2 onions
1 Tbsp oil
1 green bell pepper, diced
1 lb ground beef
Salt & Pepper
2 cans tomato soup
1/2 tsp sugar
1 pound macaroni
It’s this easy to make:
On medium/medium high heat, add oil, onion, bell pepper to a skillet and saute until onions are translucent. Add garlic if using and saute another minute.
While onion mixture id cooking, heat a pot of water for macaroni until boiling. Add macaroni and cook according to package directions.
Add ground beef and cook until fully cooked.
Add tomato soup and salt and pepper. Cook until mixture thins out and is well heated.
Drain cooked macaroni and add to the tomato soup/ground beef mixture.
Stir together and season with more salt and pepper if needed.
If you want a varied American Chop Suey recipe, try this out. It’s super easy and delicious for a weeknight meal.
